Trauma and PTSD
Traumatic events usually come out of the blue. Such events can leave us feeling shocked, disorientated, and distressed. We may feel like our world has been turned upside down. Following traumatic events you are likely to experience a range of unfamiliar psychological, emotional, and physical reactions. Different people exposed to the same trauma may respond in different ways. You may have difficulty in collecting your thoughts and handling your feelings about what has happened. A counsellor can help you understand and change how you think about your trauma and its aftermath. Your goal is to understand how certain thoughts about your trauma can cause you stress and make your symptoms worse. One approach is using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which can be helpful in doing this.
